Job Summary
The role of the Environmental Specialist Lead is to work directly with the Environmental Foreman to plan, establish, implement, and maintain environmental programs to ensure the fulfillment of all regulatory requirements required for executing contractual elements of the Performance Work Statement (PWS). In this role, the specialist lead will work closely with HSE leadership to implement and administer proactive systems that fulfill the objectives set. The specialist will also provide oversight to ensure the execution of the assigned operational tasks is accomplished.
Job Responsibilities
- Assist in preparing and planning workforce, equipment, and materials for daily activities.
- Conduct safety briefings and toolbox talks.
- Work alongside and safely oversee crews; continually monitor the job site for safety-related issues.
- Mentor crew to optimize production.
- Assist with all documentation. Examples of required paperwork include worksheets, spill reports, waste manifests, and daily reports.
- Secure the work site at the end of each shift; ensure all tools and equipment are cleaned and returned in proper working order.
- Assisting the Environmental Superintendent and Foreman with the planning and implementing of the environmental protection and hazardous materials control program.
- Provide feedback for internal environmental policies and practices to ensure they are current; conduct risk assessments and change existing or develop new recommendations from these assessments.
- Assist in addressing specific reporting, record-keeping requirements, and other pertinent regulatory compliance matters.
- Conducting periodic surveys and audits to ensure environmental compliance.
- Assist the environmental leadership by conducting ongoing training for all personnel on hazardous material management, environmental protection training, and hazmat response.
- Assist with managing activities related to environmental assessment and remediation activities, including report writing and field reports.
- Serve as Incident Leader in an Environmental/HAZMAT emergency response.
- Directs storage of site-generated hazardous waste in the dangerous waste staging areas
- Maintains adequate inventory levels.
- Perform other duties as determined by HSE management.
Job Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field is preferred or minimum of two years of practical and training experience is required.
- Current 40-hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) certificate; if expired, the candidate must be capable of obtaining it within the first 30 days.
- A valid home of record driver’s license is required.
- Minimum of Two years in the Environmental/HAZMAT field.
- Preferred experience with chemical handling and air-monitoring equipment.
- Construction industry experience, environmental and hazardous waste experience with relevant certification (i.e., OSHA, 40hr HAZWOPER)
- Preferred knowledge of ISO 14001 and familiarity with the Overseas Environmental Baseline Guidance Document (OEBGD).
- Certified in HAZMAT awareness or operational level, preferred.
- Intermediate knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Must be able to utilize test equipment, such as gas analyzers and dosimeters.
- Proven experience as a people leader. Must be collaborative and have strong problem-solving skills.
- Highly organized and attentive to detail with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to get results through influence, negotiation, and teamwork.
- Ability to work on an on-call basis as needed.
- Ability to work under pressure and time-sensitive deadlines.
- Ability to brief cross-functional teams and upper management on progress reports.
- Must be detail-oriented and able to follow and manage a project from start to finish.
Physical Requirements And Work Conditions
- Physical requirements may include lifting to 35 lbs., team lifting 50 lbs., climbing, extended sitting, standing, stooping, stretching, or bending.
- Able to wear a full and half-face respirator.
- Able to work in confined spaces.
