Position Summary:The American University of Iraq, Baghdad (AUIB) invites applications for an Open Rank Faculty position in the Petroleum Engineering discipline. Faculty at AUIB are committed to delivering excellence in teaching, learning, research, and service. This position requires a dynamic and innovative educator who will contribute to the university’s mission by providing high-quality education, engaging in continuous professional development, conducting impactful research, and actively participating in service activities that benefit both the university and the broader community.

This position reports directly to the Dean of the College of Engineering.

Core Responsibilities

Teaching Responsibilities

  • Excellence in Instruction
  • Deliver high-quality, inclusive instruction to undergraduate and/or graduate students in Petroleum Engineering.
  • Employ innovative, evidence-based teaching methods and technologies to enhance student learning.
  • Continuously improve teaching practices through feedback, reflection, and professional growth.
  • Curriculum Development
  • Develop, update, and maintain course syllabi and instructional materials that align with current industry trends and academic standards.
  • Participate in curriculum review and enhancement processes to ensure the program remains relevant and rigorous.
  • Ensure all syllabi and course materials meet department and university standards.
  • Student Engagement and Support
  • Foster a supportive and inclusive classroom environment that encourages student participation and engagement.
  • Provide timely, constructive feedback to students and offer academic support when needed.
  • Maintain regular office hours for academic advising, mentorship, and student consultation.
  • Advise students on achieving their academic and professional goals within the field of Petroleum Engineering.
  • Assessment and Evaluation
  • Design and implement fair and continuous assessment methods to evaluate student learning.
  • Utilize assessment data to refine instructional practices and improve student outcomes.
  • Grade assignments in Canvas (or similar Learning Management Systems) in a timely and consistent manner.
  • Evaluate and assess overall student performance throughout the course.

Learning Responsibilities

  • Professional Development
  • Engage in ongoing professional development to stay current with advances in Petroleum Engineering and pedagogy.
  • Participate in relevant workshops, conferences, and seminars to enhance teaching and research skills.
  • Pursue advanced degrees or certifications as appropriate to maintain expertise in the field.
  • Stay informed about innovations and emerging trends in Petroleum Engineering.
  • Scholarship and Research
  • Conduct high-quality research that contributes to the advancement of knowledge in Petroleum Engineering.
  • Publish research findings in reputable journals and present at national and international conferences.
  • Seek external funding and grants to support research initiatives.
  • Demonstrate expertise in the field through publications, presentations, and professional experiences.
  • Collaboration and Interdisciplinary Learning
  • Collaborate with colleagues across different disciplines to foster interdisciplinary learning and research.
  • Engage in collaborative teaching and research projects that promote cross-disciplinary innovation.

Service Responsibilities

  • Institutional Service
  • Participate in university governance by serving on committees and task forces.
  • Support the university’s mission and contribute to achieving strategic goals.
  • Community Engagement
  • Engage in community service and outreach activities that promote the university’s commitment to social responsibility.
  • Build partnerships with industry, government, and non-profit organizations to promote community development.
  • Student Advising, Development, and Mentorship
  • Advise students during the enrollment and registration process.
  • Mentor and guide students in their academic and professional development, particularly within the Petroleum Engineering discipline.
  • Supervise student research projects, theses, and internships.
  • Professional Service
  • Take on leadership roles in professional organizations related to Petroleum Engineering.
  • Provide expert advice and consultation to industry, government, and non-profit sectors.

Qualifications

  • A Ph.D. in Engineering for these discipline: (Agricultural, Computer, Electrical, Environmental, Mechanical and Petroleum) or a closely related field.
  • A strong record of teaching excellence and research in various specialties in Engineering.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a collaborative academic environment.
  • Commitment to student-centered teaching and learning.
  • Experience in curriculum development and academic advising.
  • A track record of published research and successful grant applications is highly desirable.
