Description
Objective
The Language Specialist helps the ICRC communicate clearly and consistently by providing translation services from English into Arabic and vice versa and/or editing services in their mother tongue.
Main duties and responsibilities
- Translates from English into Arabic and vice versa and/or edits in their mother tongue a wide range of ICRC texts, such as legal, financial, and technical, within agreed deadlines.
- Ensuring high quality and appropriate terminology and that produced text is revised by the line manager.
- Ensures that documents entrusted to him/her are translated in accordance with ICRC standards.
- Assists in delegation-related interpretation activities (seminars, workshops and meetings with interlocutors).
- May advise colleagues from other units of the organization on linguistic issues.
- Gets involved in ad hoc or ongoing projects (e.g., terminology).
- Uses and suggests updates to terminology tools in both Arabic and English.
- Proactively collaborates with external translators when volumes require extra resources.
- Advises on sensitivities regarding the use of national languages in the delegations.
- Edits documents in Arabic and English.
- Internally, interacts across the organization with all internal “clients” who request language services and provides them with the required support.
Qualifications
Education and Professional Experience required
- University degree in translation or professional language skills from a recognized academic institution or equivalent.
- 3 to 5 years of experience in translation and/or editing (preferably in an international organization setting).
- Fluency In English and Arabic is a must.
- Excellent writing skills in the mother tongue (i.e., Arabic language).
- Communication and listening skills.
- Computer proficiency is mandatory.
